We are not often directly taught how to identify, accept, and manage our emotions. Rather, we learn this by watching how those around us deal with their emotions. Some emotions may be considered “acceptable” to experience, while others may be considered “wrong” or “bad”. While emotions are a normal part of daily life, for some, they feel like a wild roller coaster. 

On a daily basis, we use emotional regulation strategies to meet the demands of the different situations we face. Some of those strategies are helpful, and some are not. Our lack of effective emotional regulation skills can affect: our mental and physical health, our relationships, job opportunities, our nutrition, our finances, and our ability to live a full and meaningful life.
