Do you feel constant tension in your muscles when you are stressed?

Is the thought of feeling more connected to your body scary?

Do you feel like there are pieces of unpleasant memories that continue to make their way into your life?

Have you ever felt like you can’t trust your feelings or the sensations in your body?

All emotions, even those that are suppressed and unexpressed, have physical effects. Unexpressed emotions tend to stay in the body like small ticking time bombs—they are illnesses in incubation

YOU ARE NOT ALONE

When a painful event is experienced, our bodies will do whatever they can to protect us. They will also remember and store what has happened to us, not only in the mind, but in various nodes throughout the body. Painful memories, stress, and pain can find their ways into our body, through stiffness, tension, or even disembodiment. When these forces go unchecked, we may become alienated from our own experience, and in turn feel less connected to others. By using somatic therapy, we can turn inward to find the places where our bodies have been storing this pain, and lovingly nurture these areas to reintegrate them into our experience. This is doing the work to tell our bodies that we are safe once again.

Let’s listen to the stories our bodies can tell us. Let us treat our bodies with the kindness, care, and respect they deserve. You have the power to reclaim your body and the sensations that come with it. Even as you read this blurb, pay attention to what kinds of physical sensations may come up for you as you interpret the messages within these words. Together, you and a practitioner will develop body awareness, resource safety, and occasionally participate in naturalistic movements to strengthen the bond between you and your experience. Through this naturalistic and collaborative process, you can reclaim your physical experience and yourself.

Therapists have used somatic therapy in treatment with variety of conditions, including but not limited to:

  • Anxiety

  • Complicated grief

  • Depression

  • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • Self-esteem problems

  • Sleep issues

  • Trust and Intimacy Issues
