“I don’t quite belong anywhere.”

“I feel the need to constantly have change.”

“I feel like other therapists don’t fully understand my experience.”

Third Culture Kids are individuals who spend at least a part of the developmental year growing up outside their passport country; this may be due to a parent’s military assignment, diplomatic mission, church mission, business position, NGO work, immigration, refugee status or other reasons.

TCKs often grow up with unique opportunities for travel and experiences.  To others their lives may sound “exotic” or “exciting.”  TCK life is rich, AND it presents some unique challenges.

  • 90% of TCKs say they are “out of synch” with their age group throughout life

  • Expats experience 2.5 x higher rate of mental illness than the general population

  • 85% of TCKs experience depression or anxiety as they reach their young adult years (ages 18-25) as a result of their collective transitions and resultant losses due to moving and transient communities, according to emerging research.

There is so much hope!  TCKs also develop wonderful resiliency and coping skills.  With some focused therapeutic intervention, TCKs and can unpack their collective “grief tower” and create a healthier mental and emotional landscape again.
